HIIT Personal Training Gold Coast

HIIT or high intensity interval training is well known for being the type of workout that’s not only great for fitness but also provides fat burning, metabolism boosting and can get big results in a short period of time. We love to incorporate HIIT style training in our PT8 Small Group Personal Training sessions at our PT Studio on the Gold Coast.

What is HIIT?

High intensity interval training (HIIT) is made up of short, high intensity bursts of exercise, followed by short recovery periods at or lower intensity. The interval ratios can change depending on the goal. Because of the high intensity, the sessions can be quite short, allowing you to get a lot of work done in a short amount of time. HIIT sessions can include cardio or strength training exercises, the high intensity intervals will be near maximal effort, with the recovery intervals around 50% of maximum.

How does HIIT work?

When you train at near-maximal effort, your aerobic system cannot cope with the work load and you must recruit your anaerobic energy systems. These work without oxygen, but as a trade-off they produce by products like lactic acid, which accumulate until you can no longer sustain the intensity and you need to reduce intensity to recover. By the time you finish a HIIT session your body will be in an oxygen deficit, so metabolism increases and heart rate stays elevated so you will continue to burn calories long after the session finishes, in order to break down all the anaerobic by-products and repay the oxygen deficit. This is known as “EPOC” or excess post- exercise oxygen consumption.

We will only use HIIT style sessions if it’s appropriate for our clients.
