Which should I do? Muay Thai or Kickboxing for fitness?

That depends on you and your goals. Both are awesome fitness workouts and will get you in the best shape of your life. If you simply want to get fit or lose weight and you don’t want to learn a new skill, or you want to throw a punch but not get punched back, Kickboxing for fitness in a class Personal Training session is definitely for you.

If you want the same great fitness benefits but you also love a challenge, want to learn a new skill or sport or simply want to learn self defence for your own protection, Muay Thai Personal Training is definitely for you. And if you’re not sure, give us a ring for a chat!

Is Muay Thai or Kickboxing for fitness hard to learn?

No it’s not! Muay Thai is a very easy Martial Art to learn because it focuses on simple and effective moves for the ring or self-defence. We teach you at your own pace, make sure you have fun and never throw you in the deep end. We also make learning fun, you’ll be hitting pads and bags on your first session, you won’t be standing in a line punching the air like many other Martial Arts. A couple of months is all it takes to be comfortable with the basics of Muay Thai, a fraction of the time of other Martial Arts such as Karate, Kung Fu, Tae Kwon Do or Arakan on the Gold Coast.

Kickboxing for fitness is even easier to learn. Aside from a few quick pointers from your Kickboxing Personal Trainer, there’s almost no technique to learn, just grab a punching bag and get stuck into it.

There’s no mind numbing fancy combinations to remember, yet every session is different to ensure you never get bored.

What ages do you train?

We train all ages. Our Personal Training clients range from primary school kids being bullied at school all the way up to adults in there seventies wanting to learn self defence and lose weight. As all of our Muay Thai sessions are one on one we can cater to all ages and goals. Our Kickboxing circuit classes tend to range from late teens to late forties and everywhere inbetween. As long as you’re keen to learn, we love training all ages and abilities.

Why should I do Muay Thai over other Martial Arts?

There are hundreds of Martial Arts out there and every Trainer has their own way of teaching it. Muay Thai, Karate, Arakan, Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu, Arakan Gold Coast and more – What’s best for you depends on your goals.

Muay Thai Kickboxing doesn’t have any Katas or forms and everyone works on what’s best for them. You’ll never do the exact same move in a line of ten people who are all different sizes and abilities. Aside from a warm up, you will never be punching the air, you will always hit pads or your training partners to ensure you learn realistic moves. We’ll customize each Personal Training session around you, your goals, your strengths and weaknesses, so unlike other Martial Arts, we don’t teach the same generic syllabus to everyone.

Although Muay Thai is a 2000 year old Martial Art there is no strict uniforms, yes ‘Sensei’s’ or lengthy bow ins. Every single thing you do will directly get you fit or teach you to fight, we won’t waste your time on anything else. So if this appeals to you, Muay Thai Kickboxing is the best Martial Art for you!

Is Muay Thai good for self-defence?

Yes, Muay Thai Kickboxing is one of the most effective forms of self-defense in the world. You will learn from Muay Thai Trainers with firsthand experience (in the ring, not the street of course!), so you will only be taught tried and proven techniques.

The key difference between Muay Thai and other Martial Arts is that Muay Thai Trainers have practical experience and have been hit (and hit hard!) in sparring and in the ring. The likes of Kung Fu, Arakan and other Martial Arts instructors don’t. If you wouldn’t expect a touch football coach to be able to teach a Rugby League tackle – don’t expect other Martial Arts instructors to be able to prepare you for what happens in a real fight, if they’ve never been in a real fight.

Do I have to be fit to start Muay Thai or Kickboxing for fitness?

All of our Muay Thai Trainers are also Personal Trainers, so we are used to training all types of people. We cater to all fitness levels and because you’re not in a line up of people like a Karate or Aerobics class no one will notice if you need to take a breather. If you’re not fit we won’t push you hard. The last thing we want is for you to be sore and sorry and quit after one lesson. And no, you won’t feel out of place, as most other people starting out aren’t fit or co-ordinated when they start either! It will only take a couple of weeks until you start feeling fitter, and in a few months you’ll be in the best shape of your life.

What equipment do I need?

Nothing for your first Kickboxing class, we can loan you a pair of Boxing gloves. You will need your own gloves after that which we sell. If you start Personal Training we’ll give you a free pair!

What does it cost and when are your classes?

Fill out the form on the right of screen and we will automatically send you our latest Gold Coast Kickboxing timetable. We’re open six days a week, we have no joining fees, you don’t need to book and our classes are all great value for money, they’re typically between $5 and $12 a session.

Gold Coast Personal Training for all goals is available from 5am to 9pm from $35 for a half hour session and from $60 for a one hour session. Or have one of our Mobile Personal Trainers come to you anywhere on the Gold Coast from only $65 for a one hour session.

What is Muay Thai?

Muay Thai is the traditional Martial Art of Thailand. It’s around 2000 years old and like most Martial Arts it is very traditional and cultural. Nowadays, especially outside of Thailand, most Gyms teach it as more of a competitive sport than a traditional Martial Art. It makes it a lot more fun for people to learn and get fit! It’s been in Australia for around 30 years but has only really taken off in the last 15 years or so as more and more people realise the amazing fitness, self defence and fighting benefits it offers.

It’s also a great spectator sport with fight shows, including many Gold Coast Muay Thai shows, televised on Foxtel every couple of weeks which has dramatically helped the sports popularity in recent years. Kickboxing is the general descriptive term used for Muay Thai and it’s derivatives, however technically speaking it means no knees, elbows or grappling in a ring fight.

What experience do you have?

Scott Hunt is the owner and head Trainer of Final Contact Muay Thai. Scott began Muay Thai on the Gold Coast in 1996. In 1999 he had his first Muay Thai fight and opened the Final Contact Muay Thai Gym at the Nerang PCYC. In 2001 as student numbers grew and grew, he opened his own full time Gold Coast Muay Thai Gym, (combined with his Personal Training Studio, see www.fitnessenhancement.com) and turned his attention to training others.

Fitness Enhancement is now the largest Personal Training Studio on the Gold Coast with a team of the Coast’s best Personal Trainers. To date, Scott has trained students for dozens of Muay Thai fights, and personally taught over 20,000 Muay Thai classes and Personal Training sessions. As well as being a Muay Thai Trainer, Scott is a qualified Personal Trainer and holds Bachelor’s degree in Business with a Major in Sports Management.

All Trainers who work for Final Contact and Fitness Enhancement are qualified and experienced Personal Trainers. Some of our Personal Trainers are also Muay Thai Trainers. All of our Muay Thai Personal Trainers have over 5 years experience and or ring experience. But most importantly of all our Muay Thai Personal Trainers are dedicated to helping you achieve your goals. They’re not there to beat you up and boost their own ego’s, they are down to earth and passionate about teaching you Muay Thai. So if you want to learn Muay Thai without the image and attitude of many Gyms, we are the place for you.

Why don’t you do Muay Thai classes anymore?

Unfortunately I have stopped running Muay Thai classes as of late 2011. After 16 years in the sport and 12 years of teaching it’s time for a change. I’ve achieved many goals through Muay Thai so it’s time to focus on some exciting new challenges and goals. I’m no longer personally training people to ensure I can grow the Personal Training and Kickboxing circuit side of the Gym to its full potential (and have a little time left over for all my other sports). With a team of 15+ Personal Trainers and Muay Thai Trainers from Tweed to Logan it’s an exciting new challenge!

Whilst we have many great one on one Muay Thai Trainers and pad holders I chose to stop my classes rather than have someone take over. They’ve been my classes since 1999, so I’d rather stop them altogether and end “my” classes on a high, than have someone take them for me.

If you’re looking for proper Muay Thai Gym for fight training and sparring please give us a call on 0411228633 so as we can refer you to one of the many excellent Gyms on the Goldard classes to offer you.

If you’re one of the 1,000 plus people I’ve trained over years, whether it be for a few classes or a few fights – thank you and keep in touch
